My uncle’s glossy drawer of audio cassettes conjuring up the memories of several classics music which he decorated so cleanly so exotically. The multi-stack cassette was gracefully displaying his proud collection of several genre albums. And every time I played something out of the heap, always sounds like those old songs, just meant to make you lullaby. And, When it comes about those tune & move of disco were so old to me. I always told myself that Saturday Night Fever song is not for you . I was too young to enjoy it..,and I was too old to mimick 70’s disco era outfitting. In mid 80’s, I saw My Honk Kong uncle who was just back for vacation has imitated Barry Gibb. I still hate that dress.
That was the time when ipod called walkman, only a TV channel in blur frames, Despite all, we enjoyed was Radio and those little Sony audio cassette player. I remember, One fine evening, my brother bought it and played in a loud speaker, for the first time I heard the very first track of MJ Thrillers with my music aficionado Uncle. We Played it again & again & again. The height of the voice was suggesting the pitch of the singer’s fervor, it was guttural and demanding .When we saw the footage in rented-video, we realized every line of his songs was rooted in his feet and hips and hands. It was one stop show for us.
We played & danced with it every Dashain, Tihar and every other festival. The best dancer in my place even copied the not-so-moonwalk and some of the trademark hypnotic moves including signature crotch grabbing
All 80’s to mid 90’s ,MJ sent irresistible jitters in our heart & minds. His experiment with various themes and genres ballads to techno-edged new jack swing to work that incorporates both funk, disco-pop, soul, soft rock, jazz and pop ballads shift the music into new paradigm. The pop-culture emerge and left the unforgettable moments. The moment when We forgot Eagles, Elvis or the Beatles. He had his powerful vocal for every cause. All he was just convergence of talent, songs that finds universal acclaim. .
I hardly remember, When he showed up such a strange physical transformation that made him more eccentric and secluded? Was it By early 90’s, Nobody wants to remember it. But It became so evident when he started revealing his eerie stasis. May be it was vitiligo which he thought a serious threat for his career and came up with radical way out, But afterwards the life never became same again, Neverland Ranch opulent life style, the radical facial change, molestation charges, alleged lewd behavior, massive debt, the bankruptcy, drugs addiction, and heart-wrenching downfall. All seems a tragic story of a man-child who always love children but the world saw it pretty differently.
In late 90’s, I was last to hear Don McLean ”American Pie” dedicated for Buddy Holl, Ritchie Valens and J.P, for me, it was just not the music and lyrics it means me how you missed your favorite icon when they managed to influence you at one time of your life. The music when you hear will take back to your heydays and replay the footage back from your archive like it just happens few minutes back
